The Space Marines or Adeptus Astartes are foremost amongst the defenders of humanity, the greatest of the Emperor of Mankind's warriors, created from the genetic material of His gene-sons, the Primarchs. They are barely human at all, but superhuman; having been made superior in all respects to a normal man by a harsh regime of genetic modification, psycho-conditioning and rigorous training. Space Marines are untouched by plague or any natural disease and can suffer wounds that would kill a lesser being several times over, and live to fight again. Clad in ancient Power Armour and wielding the most potent weapons known to Man, the Space Marines are terrifying foes and their devotion to the Emperor and the Imperium of Man is unyielding. They are the God-Emperor's Angels of Death, and they know no fear. Once composing the great armies known as the Space Marine Legions, the Astartes were led by their Primarchs on the Great Crusade that reunited all of the human-settled galaxy in the late 30th Millennium. After the interstellar civil war known as the Horus Heresy erupted, pitting the Legions against one another, they were divided up into the smaller formations known as Chapters to make the betrayal of any one unit less deadly than that of an entire Legion. Once tasked with serving as the Imperium's primary military force, today that function is largely left to the armies of the Astra Militarum, the Imperial Guard. Instead, the Space Marines now serve as a form of special operations troops for the Imperium, the ultimate force multipliers. Even a single company of 100 Astartes can turn the tide of conflict for an entire world.

Space Marine Forces

The Adeptus Astartes are capable of deploying a diverse array of troop types, formations and vehicles as the tactical situation demands. Tactical Marines are versatile warriors who make up the vast majority of all Space Marine squads and are supported by Rhino and Razorback armoured personnel carriers. The most veteran and elite of all Space Marines, the Terminators clad in the various patterns of increasingly rare Tactical Dreadnought Armour, are veritable walking tanks particularly skilled at void and ship-based combat who can wade deep into enemy formations. Assault Marines are equipped with rocket-propelled Jump Packs that allow them to soar above the enemy and crash into his lines wielding ranged and close combat weapons like the frightening Chainsword. Various anti-gravitic Land Speeders and Assault Bikes allow the more mobile Chapters to outflank the foe, while the potent heavy weapons of Devastator Marines provide heavy infantry support. Even mortally wounded Space Marines can continue to fight for the Emperor and their Battle-Brothers within the cold life-support sarcophagus of a cybernetic Dreadnought. Finally, an array of vehicles like the Vindicator, Predator, Whirlwind and the king of the battlefield, the Land Raider, mean that the Astartes will never lack for the best armoured vehicles in the Imperium. For air support, the Space Marines draw upon some of the most advanced aircraft in the Imperium, including the Thunderhawk gunship, the Stormraven, and the Stormtalon.

Chapters

While now numbering only 1,000 Chapters of 1,000 Battle-Brothers scattered across the galaxy, the Space Marines still represent the single most potent military force in the Imperium. Most Chapter's order of battle and tactics are determined by the Codex Astartes originally penned after the Heresy by the Primarch Roboute Guilliman. As the huge Legiones Astartes were reorganised by Guilliman into Chapters, a single Chapter always maintained the original name and iconography of its First Founding Legion, while the rest of that Legion was split into new Chapter formations with a new name and regalia during the so-called Second Founding. There have been Twenty-six Foundings of new Space Marine Chapters in the Imperium's history, and the most famous are considered legends by the trillions of people who call the galaxy home.
