The majority of Space Marines chapters follow the Codex Astartes, a holy tome written by the Ultramarine primarch Roboute Guilliman. The Codex Astartes details the proper structure and mobilization of a Space Marine Chapter. The Codex has been adopted by the vast majority of Space Marine Chapters. Consequently, most Space Marine Chapters are considered "Codex Chapters," due to their adherence to the Codex.

Each Space Marine chapter consist of 1000 fighting marines plus support staff which are divided into companies. Each company has its own command staff, consisting of:
Most will usually be accompanied by a command squad that will usually include:
- Company Champion
- Apothecary - For a Space Marine Chapter to have a future it must carefully protect and preserve the organic implants that turn an initiate into a Space Marine.
- Standard Bearer -- Standard bearers carry the company banner that shows the company's feats and prowess. Captains may also display personal heraldry in the banner. On rare occasions, the chapter banner might be fielded.

1st Company is made up of veteran marines. These skilled warriors are trained in the use of the holy Terminator Armour.
2nd to 5th Companies are referred to as Battle Companies. Each Battle Company has
- 6 ten men Tactical Squads
- 2 ten men Assault Squads
- 2 ten men Devastators Squads
- Support tanks, bikes, land speeders and Rhino transport
- Dreadnoughts -- Dreadnoughts are revered warriors who are mortally wounded and entombed in a dreadnought sarcophagus.
6th to 9th Companies are reserve companies.
10th is the scout company who are under going the process of becoming a Space Marine (trial by fire). those who survive are welcomed to the chapter as brother marines and are given power armor.
