This is a list of official Imperial Guard regiments created by Games Workshop. This is not a complete list as not every Imperial Guard regiment in existence in the Imperium of Man is known.

Please Note: Fan-created regiments must be posted at the Warhammer 40k Fanon Wiki - Imperial Guard Regiments and not on this page.

Although recorded in Imperial records as an Imperial Guard regiment of the late 41st Millennium active between 975.M41 and 988.M41, many of its elements are in fact highly archaic and more reminiscent of an Imperial Army regiment of the Great Crusade and Horus Heresy periods. When facing a tactical situation that is very fluid, the Asgardians take advantage by utilising the sheer speed of their biologically enhanced mounts, bred for generations by their world's contingent of Tech-priests. Cantican ColonialEdit

The Cantican Colonial, also known as the CantiCol, are regiments of the Imperial Guard raised up from the Imperial world of Cantica, located in the Medina Corridor, in the Medina Sub-sector. Cantica was the defensive buttress of the Medina Corridor. Although a little-known regiment, the CantiCol were the Medina Corridor's primary troop formation. According to an Imperial census, 400,000 Guardsmen were garrisoned thinly across the Medina System alongside indigenous Planetary Defence Force elements. The CantiCol regiments had been raised in the 35th Millennium from the Cantican Loyalists of the Reclamation Wars. They had been one of the few warring dust tribes to aid the Imperium during the Reclamation and were thus the only regiment granted the right to defend the entire region. As a poorly equipped regiment, the CantiCol Guardsmen learned to compensate for equipment shortfalls. The Canticans did not possess many armoured vehicles, but the Cantican infantry squadrons were able to power safely across the battlefield in mostly ancient, obsolete tanks known as Siegfried Siege Tanks and Centaurs. The Siegefried tank was a modified variant of the Land Crawler utility vehicle commonly found by the billions all over the Imperium, while the Centaur is a small armoured utility vehicle of the Imperial Guard that is used in a wide variety of battlefield roles. The Canticans were also known to utilise elite Rough Rider mounted cavalry squadrons known as Cantican Horse Cavalry. Also called the Cantican Lancers, these Rough Riders were considered fighting men of no small repute. Much like the Kasrkin of Cadia or the Commandos of Kurass, the Lancers were an elite formation whose membership was limited and highly selective. As a poorly equipped force, Cantican Guardsmen were defined by the quality of their men rather than the superiority of their wargear, and the Lancers represented the apogee of this philosophy. Candidates could be drawn from any unit within the Cantican Colonial Regiments and thus selection was egalitarian in a rough, though uncompromising way. The Cantican Lancers are considered a hard bunch and the rank-and-file of the company, not the officers, decide who is permitted to wear the Lancer pin. The regular Cantican Guardsmen lacked the heavy armour prevalent amongst other Imperial Guard formations, and the Lancers bridged the gap between infantry and vehicle. While the primary role of the Cantican light horse was to escort the few precious tanks in the Cantican arsenal as mounted infantry, the Lancers were utilised as shock troops. Wearing chest bandoleers clustered with Fuse Bombs, the Lancers would charge upon their destriers headlong into enemy formations, leaving a trail of explosive Fuse Bombs in their wake.

The Jantine Patricians were sent in support of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, a massive Imperial Crusade fought over the course of more than 23 standard years between 755.M41 and 778.M41, to help retake the Sabbat Worlds Sector located at the rimward edge of the Segmentum Pacificus from the heretical Forces of Chaos. Due to heretical actions undertaken by the Patricians during the Crusade in an attempt to wipe out Commissar Gaunt's regiment and reclaim what they saw as their besmirched honour, all records of the Patrician's honours and victories were subsequently destroyed on the orders of the Inquisition and the regiment was never reformed.

The Jopall Indentured Squadrons are Imperial Guard regiments that hail from the once-peaceful Agri-World of Jopall. On their homeworld, the Jopall owe their planetary government money as soon as they are born. Taking up valuable resources throughout their childhood, they incur a debt that they cannot repay until adolescence. Most citizens of Jopall spend the majority of their adult lives working off the debts they incur during the first part of their lives. There are ways around this punishing system, however; the citizen can either borrow money from their local lord, or they can work off the debt to the government by joining the Jopall Indentured Squadrons. This system explains why the Jopall are never short of recruits for their Imperial Guard regiments. The Jopall Indentured Squadrons are known equally well across the galaxy for both their fine marksmanship and their intense greed. The question of recompense is often raised by the officers of the Indentured Squadrons, and every life they take is tallied somewhere around the soldier's person, to be raised at a later date with the planetary government in pursuit of payment of their debts.

The regiment took part in the retaking of the fortress known as the Ironhide, but in the midst of the battle, a freak earthquake breached its 200 foot high walls. Soon multiple enemies of the Imperium arrived on Kronus for their own nefarious reasons, initiaing the campaign known as the Dark Crusade. The 10th Logres fought alongside the Ultramarines 4th Company, commanded by Captain Uriel Ventris, in the valiant defence of this Imperial world. Though the planet was saved and the 10th Logres survived the battle, their commander perished in a final act of heroic self-sacrifice. Colonel Rabelaq commanded his regiment from the relative safety of a Capitol Imperialis, a massive super-heavy tank often utilised as a mobile command base. During the defence of the capital city of Erebus, Rabelaq ordered his vehicle to charge into the enemy to protect the rear flank of the 993rd Death Korps of Krieg Regiment. Though the Krieg regiment was saved from destruction, the Rabelaq's Capitol Imperialis was surrounded by thousands of Tyranid bioforms. Firing upon a massive Tyranid Bio-Titan, the enraged creature knocked the Imperial vehicle on its side. As the Tyranids tore into the vehicle's hull, Colonel Rabelaq ordered the city's Defence Cannons to fire on his vehicle's exposed plasma reactor, and the resultant explosion vaporised everything within a 500 meter radius, fatally wounding the Bio-Titan.

A few companies of the Lostock 23rd were involved in a key experiment carried out by the Tech-priests of the Magos Biologis. They surgically modified these selected Guardsmen with drug-secreting glands that allowed them to resist the debilitating effects of the Tyranid Hive Mind and to help them survive unprotected in the highly toxic biosphere of Dantis III, as well as boosting their combat abilities and aggressiveness. Dantis III was eventually scoured of the Tyranid menace, but the Lostock 23rd was utterly annihilated. Only three of these so-called Gland Warriors are believed to have survived the conflict. These regiments hail from the blessed world of Maccabeus Quintus, an arid and bitterly cold Shrine World located in the Calixis Sector, where the great General Drusus fell and was raised up as a saint by the glory of the Emperor during the Angevin Crusade which conquered the Calixis Sector for the Imperium. This harsh world is not blessed because of the resources it possesses (which are few), or because of the climate (which is harsh), but because of the faith that grows there in abundance. A site of pilgrimage for the Imperial Cult's faithful across the Calixis Sector, this Shrine World has a significant military tradition all its own. These pilgrims form the core of the Maccabian militias, the Planetary Defence Force of the Shrine World, the finest of which are chosen to become Maccabian Janissaries. Like Saint Drusus, they defend or expand the Imperium in battle, which is regarded as the most pious form of worship of the God-Emperor. The Mordant Acid-Dogs specialise in subterranean tunnel fighting. They are typically deployed to combat zones where the Imperial High Command wishes to take advantage of their natural affinity for dark and confined spaces. The harsh conditions of their world breeds extremely tough and resilient warriors who are perfect for conscription into the military forces of the Imperium. The people of Mordant Prime live in subterranean tunnels, where criminal gangs are the only authority, preying upon the weak and extorting them for their meager resources. Only the skilled miners who are a part of the ancient organisation of Mordant mining clans, do not suffer from the extreme poverty experienced by the majority of the populace. The miners contract local manual labor, paying them only enough to acquire the most basic of necessities, which forces them to live in rustic shacks in the shanty caverns of the world. The Mordant Regiments draw their conscripts from those unfortunate wretches that can no longer tolerate the harsh life of their world and the horrid living conditions, or from those who have earned the dire wrath of one of the many criminal gangs.

Mordian Iron GuardEdit

The Mordian Iron Guard are the superbly drilled and accoutred regiments of the Imperial Guard that hail from the Hive World of Mordian. This bleak world is tidally-locked with its sun, which causes one side of it to always be bathed in perpetual darkness while the other is continuously washed by its star's radiation, leaving it a scorched and lifeless wasteland. As such, all human settlements on Mordian are located on the world's dark side, and the planet has well-earned its moniker as the "World of Eternal Night." The people of Mordian are grim and dour by nature, respecting only discipline and duty. Their regiments are fiercely loyal to their cause: the prosecution of the Emperor's enemies. In battle, these highly-disciplined soldiers present perfectly formed ranks of troops to the enemy, unleashing precisely timed volleys of las-fire from behind a hedge of bayonet points. Some enemies of the Emperor have been misled by the Mordians' elaborate and ornate uniforms to believe that they were facing amateurs or only ceremonial troops, only to find the bright uniforms contain tough, steely-eyed and implacable warriors of the Imperium.

Mordion RegimentsEdit

The Mordion Regiments are the regiments of the Imperial Guard raised from the Hive World of Mordion. A notable regiment is the 7th Mordion, which was raised from a particularly vicious hive city gang called the "Night Rippers." The Night Rippers first came to the notice of Imperial Commander Varren, the Planetary Governor of Mordion, when they seized control of the whole of Island-City Two. The Night Rippers had managed to use the spaceport and hundreds of orbit-capable ships they captured to attempt a blockade of the planet in support of various demands for cash and equipment. Their efforts went largely unrewarded and the survivors of the action by the world's security forces to retake the spaceport were recruited, forcibly, into the Imperial Guard. It was decided that such formidable fighting skills should not be needlessly wasted, and if redirected properly, they would quickly prove invaluable to the Imperial Guard regiments of Mordion. Only the leaders of the rebellion were executed. Imperial Commander Varren chose to enact the ritual deaths using one of the Night Rippers' own ceremonial serrated swords. The gang's traditional badge therefore took on a new meaning as the symbol of their entry into Imperial service and an emblem of their leaders' sacrifice. D Company of the 7th Mordion deployed in support of the Pacification of Flotis III. They were assigned to pacify the third continent by ridding it of a dangerous population of Orks who had established a large settlement there. They were also to bring back into the Imperial fold the fiercely independent human population of the region who had managed to remain free of Ork domination. The Night Rippers acquitted themselves well over the course of this ultimately successful two-year-long campaign.

It is common practise amongst the savage hive-gangers of Mortant to take body parts as trophies from defeated enemies. The Mortant VII Regiment, known as the "Headhunters," were actively encouraged by their commander Colonel Radge to continue this custom, earning them a vicious reputation. During the infamous "Sacking of Colonia," the "Headhunters" supposedly went on a three-month rampage, pillaging and plundering from Imperial settlements on Colonia, after defeating the Ork hordes of the Warlord Gharag Badtoof. It was later claimed that the Orks were actually responsible for much of the devastation, but there are those amongst the people of Colonia who still blame the "Headhunters."

Having fallen out of favour with his Primarch Perturabo, Dantioch and his subordinate Imperial Army elements were relegated to performing garrison duty upon the barren world of Lesser Damantyn, where the former Warsmith was responsible for the construction of the formidable fortress known as the Schadenhold. When a fellow Warsmith loyal to the traitorous Warmaster Horus came to Lesser Damantyne to inform Dantioch that his fortress would be used as a staging area and resupply point for the inevitable campaign of the Traitor Legions against Terra, Dantioch refused to acknowledge his former brethren, declaring his loyalty remained with the Emperor. The overpopulated hive cities of Praetoria are renowned for their squalor and degradation, and produce some of the toughest hive gangers on any of the Hive Worlds in the Imperium. This vast population works as little more than slave-labour in the huge manufactoria complexes on the world, producing the goods that have made the planet (and its rulers) amongst the richest in the Imperium of Man. Praetoria possesses a huge fleet of merchant craft that trade all over the Segmentum and beyond. Imperial Guard regiments raised on Praetoria are renowned for their iron discipline and bravery, even in the face of the most overwhelming odds. They detest slovenliness and disorder and even in the midst of the fiercest battle will ensure their ranks are correctly dressed in parade ground fashion and have their uniforms smartly fastened. The planetary lords of Praetoria hold it is only through fearsome training and draconian punishments for the most minor infringements that the hive-toughened inhabitants of their planet can be made to follow orders and do as they are told as part of a highly-regimented military unit. The Praetorian Guard are easily recognisable in their distinctive uniforms which typically consists of their trademark scarlet tunic with epaulettes and dark blue trousers with a vertical scarlet stripe on the outside leg. The Roane Deepers fought alongside the Tanith First and Only on several occasions, most notably in the defence of Vervunhive during the Sabbat Worlds Crusade. The Deepers have a reputation for being lazy and somewhat lackadaisical or laid back in their approach to warfare and training. Their reputation as a regiment is somewhat middling to say the least. However, they have proven themselves staunch and tenacious fighters when the las-bolts begin to fly. The regiment is rather poorly equipped - a result of being far down the Departmento Munitorum's list of priorities for supply. This fact no doubt explains the large number of expert "scroungers" amongst their ranks. The Deepers are a light infantry regiment, much like Gaunt's Ghosts themselves, but without the same capacity for stealth. They suffered greatly in the defence of Vervunhive, where they fought in mustard drab fatigues and netted helmets.

These Guardsmen maintain the heretical belief that magic also armours the Woad Warriors against fear, and makes them savage, dangerous and not-quite controllable fighters. But these heretical beliefs have mostly been replaced through indoctrination in the orthodox beliefs of the Imperial Cult. These savage warriors hold that belief itself will conquer bullets and laser blasts.

It has proven to be an appropriate nickname of some further application, as the Verghastite personnel influx into the regiment also considered themselves "ghosts" due to the destruction of their home hive city. Vitrian DragoonsEdit

The Vitrian Dragoons are regiments of the Imperial Guard raised on the vast arid Desert World of Vitria. The Dragoons stem from a martial culture formed entirely around the Vitrian Honour Code, the Byhata, an ancient treatise on warfare. Every Vitrian Trooper carries his own copy of the Byhata on his person at all times, even into combat. Tradition states that the Byhata should be carried in a special pocket under the trooper's armour, directly over his heart. Every copy of the Byhata is fitted with a lock that is gene-coded to the owner, so that only he may open the book. In the Vitrian culture, it is a capital offence for anyone other than a Vitrian to gain access to or read the Byhata. The Dragoons are heavy infantry regiments and have a Storm Trooper-mentality, constantly firing their laser weapons on the highest setting, as it states in the Byhata that one should always strive to make both the first strike and the last one. While this means that each shot is more likely to penetrate armour and inflict greater tissue damage on the target, it also means they deplete their las-clips far more quickly than other regiments with a more measured approach. Vitrian Dragoons wear specially fitted armor formed from the metallic glass that their homeworld is famous for. This glass armour gives the Vitrian Dragoons extraordinary protection, especially against energy weapons. At the flip of a switch on the waist, the glass pieces of the armour will rotate in place to present the much darker underside, providing the Vitrians with effective nighttime camoflauge. Regiments of Vitrian Dragoons have fought in many warzones across the Imperium. Vitria sent multiple regiments, including the 2nd Vitrian (Mobile), 10th Vitrian (Armoured Brigade), and the 161st Vitrian (Heavy Support), in support of the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, a massive Imperial Crusade fought over the course of more than 23 standard years between 755.M41 and 778.M41, to help retake the Sabbat Worlds Sector located at the rimward edge of the Segmentum Pacificus from the heretical Forces of Chaos.

During the outset of Abaddon's invasion of Cadia, treachery struck at the heart of the Imperium's defences. As the defenders of the Cadian Gate mustered at the Tyrok Fields, the traitorous Imperial Guard regiments of the Volscani Cataphracts revealed their true allegiance to the Ruinous Powers. The Traitors slaughtered hundreds of loyal Guardsmen before any response could be coordinated. The intent of the Volscani's treason was revealed as they swarmed aboard the Leviathan command vehicle of the Governor Primus of Cadia and proceeded to slaughter him and much of the senior command of Cadia's armed forces. This included the commander-in-chief of the defenders of the Cadian Gate, who was killed in the brutal attack. At the darkest moment, then-Colonel Ursarkar E. Creed took control of the dire situation. Rallying his 8th Cadian Regiment, the bloodied defenders were quickly organised and ordered to advance upon the Traitors. The 8th Cadian led the charge into the ranks of the traitorous Volscani. When the galaxy was consumed in war and anarchy, the Emperor commanded that worlds still loyal to the Imperium send forth fighting men to help defend it against the Warmaster Horus and his Traitor Legions. Vostroya refused, arguing that it could better serve the Imperium by continuing to devote all its efforts to the manufacture of weapons for the Emperor's armies, and that to give up so much of its populace to become warriors for the Imperial Army would render it incapable of producing those weapons in sufficient quantities. The Vostroyans' refusal to provide soldiers was met with uncommon mercy by the Imperium once the Heresy had ended, and the people of Vostroya have forever after sought to atone for their mistake, promising to provide the first-born son of every Vostroyan family to the service of the Imperial Guard.
