[edit] Overview
Mars has become a Forge World in the Imperium of man, producing vast amounts of weapons for Imperial war efforts through out the galaxy.
Mars is also the twin planet of Holy Terra, and one of many-long inhabited worlds near to the Cradle of Humanity. It is the home and power center of the Adeptus Mechanicus, the ancient and Byzantine priesthood of the Machine God, and the heart of their galaxy-spanning monopoly on technology. Therefore, Mars is just as important to the Imperium survival as Holy Terra. Mars is peppered with towering hive cities, and there is very little of the planet's surface which remains untouched by the constructions of the Techpriests.
Mars is ruled over by the Fabricator General, and he holds almost every known STC. This is ostensibly so he can construct better and more durable vehicles, although it is fairly clear that he is simply hoarding them.
Its also rumored that the presumably most powerful of the C'tan, the Void Dragon, sleeps on Mars
