Hi every one why is the two space marine list this one and the one in space marine chapters why not just make the one place to list them all just a though - Tellos 15:31, 7 April 2008 (UTC)
The reason there are two lists is because "List of Space Marine Chapters" was started first, and the article "Space Marine" was imported as part of the Trans-Wiki Project to preserve information that will be lost on Wikipedia. Those imported articles are very large and are slowly being split into smaller sections as new articles. Frankly I think the list on the "Space Marine" article is redundant. It should be removed and a link made to the article "List of Space Marine Chapters". - Futhark 08:07, 2 November 2008 (UTC) Talk
Page Size
IMHO the file size has gone well past the safe limit and is ready to implode under its own weight. I think it is better if this page was a simple list of links to the chapter information. Each chapter should have a separate unique page that can be fleshed out as needed. That's just my 2 cents - Futhark 11:39, 1 July 2008 (UTC)
- Well, as I see it, the page is 'exploding' in size due to two things.
- First, that several Chapters have a fair amount of information about the Chapter itself buried in the descriptive section that is part of each entry. For example, see the Blood Ravens or Emperor's Wrath entries.
- Second, the apparent addition of unverified Chapters (fanon or canon, either way they're not referenced by Wikia page links or Real World (c) content). The entry for the Golden Vanguard is a sterling example of this sort.
- It might also help if 'someone' would suggest (or better yet, just make it) a template for entries here. A {{ChapterList|<Chapter's Name>|<Descriptive Blurb}} pattern that would spit out a standardized Name - Description - Page Link blurb.
- Some clearly stated procedural rules (granted, just imposing rules is ridiculous on a wiki if they're not backed by ArbCon/Admin, but there you go...) in a highlighted box at the top of the page. Something to the effect of:
- NOTE: This list contains only Chapters that can be referenced in GW gamebooks, novels or materials. If you can't find the Chapter you listed, check here on the [[List_of_Space_Marine_Chapters/Unverified Chapters]] page. (the nowiki stuff is deliberate, note) -Wulfenbach 10:09, July 15, 2010 (UTC)
- Actually, Montonius, I did mean to use that page link (hence the nowiki bit), but as it was late, I forgot to develop the explanation. I also meant to suggest that it may be worth creating a subsid. page called that, where anyone coming along can move Chapters to for verification (or if they fail, off to FanonWiki!), so that someone with sufficient reasources can vet them. In my case, I really have few books (etc), so I can't really participate in the verification bit. I have no qualms about going through the list and saying "huh, that doesn't look right, off to the verfication page!", but have some minor quibbles about simply deleting the info (since people do put in some work into the descriptions). Call it fallout from WP's questionable editor/page purges. -Wulfenbach 00:15, July 16, 2010 (UTC)
- I actually like the format of the page as it currently exists and have no intention of deleting anything that is not demonstratably false, though I will edit it all for consistency, grammar, word choice, spelling, etc. I have the complete resources necessary for all verification. I have begun placing all of the Space Marine pages into a unified format that will now be used across the Wiki. Verification is slow, however, because of the sheer size of material. If you can comb through the list of Space Marine Chapters and pick out the most poorly created Chapter pages or the infromation that strikes you as most likely to be false and give me this list, I can replace it with all currently known material for that Chapter. I believe we have gotten rid of all the fan-related Chapters as I have cracked down on most of the fan-created content that was getting onto the site, but one or two may still have slipped through before I became Administrator in May 2010, as we have a decidedly larger list of Space Marine Chapters than that in existence over at the Lexicanum, which I often use as a back-up to check for errors. -Montonius 08:40, July 16, 2010 (UTC)
- You have my official envy then, for I am bookless in relation to your library. What might be this unified format for SM pages you speak of? Example, please, so others may join in (can't have you doing all the work, it's why you get servitors, right?) Shall we post the Chapters to a page off your talk page then? It would be easier I think for that, since you'll be checking it and we'd know where to go. -Wulfenbach 10:59, July 18, 2010 (UTC)
- Great idea. Give me some time to find the perfect example page from amongst the best Chapter pages, I'll bring it to your attention on your talk page, then you post the lists of suspect Chapters to my talk page under the title of "Chapters Requiring Verification" or some such. For anyone joining in on this snipe hunt, look to here for where to post needed tweakery. -Wulfenbach 19:58, July 19, 2010 (UTC)
Fan Stuff
This should not include Fan created chapters, this should be for facts only. We need more references for each chapter. as it is I'm removing any chapter that blatantly admits to being fan created. Again, lets keep it professional guys. - Preceding was added by 97.117.71.33 on 07:22, July 27, 2008
On Fan Based Chapters and References
I agree, this article is just for canon material, and not fan based chapters. When I find that a chapter is not official I delete them.
How to Reference an Article
People need to include references for their postings for the chapters. I have been working on creating pages for each chapter and there are times I have not known whether the entry was fan based or not.
There is a page with commonly used references citations: WH40k:Reference
Anatomy of a Reference Tag
The structure for a reference is simple.
Stuff that you are writing about that needs references.... <ref name="shorthand">citations go here</ref>
Here is a real reference tag for pages 72 and 73 on the Codex Space Marine 4th edition
<ref name="CSM4-p72-73">''Codex: Space Marines'' 4th Edition, (2004). p 72-73, Chambers, Andy, Nottingham: Games Workshop. ISBN 1-84154-526-0.</ref>
Adding a Reference List
Then place the following near the bottom of the edited article, just above the categories {{Reflist}}. It will automatically create a list of references for the article. It will also auto-number the references, and create links that allow navigation between the article section cited, and the reference list. - Futhark 07:55, 2 November 2008 (UTC) Talk
Missing Chapter
Why is there no entry for the thousand sons on this page. As one of the founding chapters I thought they would be one of the first 20 on the list. - Preceding was added by 77.103.205.79 on 22:02, May 14, 2010

Minor Typo

You missed the punisher's out. There a chaos marine faction, with bone coloured armour and a black skeleton painted on it. The Colour scheme is from Codex: Chaos Space Marines. There is currently no info on the, besides there colours. I Would add it myself but its blocked. --For Russ! For the Wolftime! 11:01, October 17, 2010 (UTC)
