The games, novels and short stories of Warhammer 40,000 take place in a dystopic science-fantasy universe with most stories set in the last days of the 41st Millennium, over 38,000 years in the future, where Mankind has settled more than a million worlds across the known galaxy. Most of humanity is united under the Imperium of Man, a brutal theocratic regime united in its worship of the divine Emperor of Mankind. Despite its size and power, the Imperium teeters on the brink of collapse due to a combination of escalating war, corruption, bureaucratic inefficiency, and technological stagnation.
